This is a property that truly took my breath away! In my mind’s eye, the most iconic image of Tuscany is a small country road lined with cypress trees. The approach to Borgo Santo Pietro delivers this, along with another iconic image – a line-up of shiny red Vespas for guest use!

This 13th century villa was discovered by a Danish couple back in 2001. They had a strong vision about restoring it along with its 200 acres of land to create something truly special – someplace that combines nature with nurture. What they have created is a borgo (hamlet) complete with an elegantly furnished, stately villa with lush gardens; a hidden Japanese-style lake; vine-covered walkways,: an artist in residence; a floral atelier; and a transporting spa.

Although the property is relatively “new”, it has the patina of something much older.  It is all very authentic, with beautifully elegant touches throughout. The accommodations are sumptuous, some with private outdoor space attached.

The property is well positioned to explore Siena as well as some of the beautiful hill towns of Tuscany. The staff is happy to arrange a wide variety of experiences and excursions, including a visit to the Monastery of San Calgano, dating back to 1180. It is thought to be a magical place that evokes feelings of serenity. It is also the home of Saint Calgano’s sword which he plunged into a stone when he abandoned his life of wealth and privilege.

There is much to explore in the areas surrounding Borgo Santo Pietro, but no one will blame you if you can’t tear yourself away from the property. There is a spectacular Michelin-starred restaurant, Meo Moda, as well as a unique setting for a more casual offering, Trattoria sull’Albero, which was created around a sprawling oak tree so as to create the feeling of dining in a rustic treehouse.

When you are not enjoying all of the culinary and wine offerings, you may also enjoy the chance to explore the exquisite gardens or take a class. Flower arranging; cooking; cheesemaking; art lessons and more are available on property.

Tuscany has no shortage of beautiful properties. The landscapes provide stunning settings for historical castles and estates that have been converted into luxury resorts. In the case of Borgo Santo Pietro, the founders created a soulful retreat that delivers the most authentic Tuscan offerings and experiences. I will admit to having shed a tear when I had to bid “a presto” to this exquisite property. For now, it lives in my heart. It is where I dream of returning to at the very first opportunity.
